Trusts are paying AMT now if they deduct investment fees - with some exceptions. There are major ramifications for trusts that are required to pay out income but still end up with taxes payable, especially if capital cannot be accessed. Many tax and legal implications with this issue.

Professional background:

  • Before joining CPA Canada, Ryan had over 20 years of experience in income tax practice, including with major firms such as Baker Tilly in Sudbury. 

  • He has extensive experience advising on income tax issues and delivering practical insights to practitioners. 

  • Ryan recently completed a PhD in Law from Queen's University, focusing on the effectiveness of tax policy in producing beneficial economic outcomes. 

Role at CPA Canada:

  • As Director of Tax, he contributes to CPA Canada’s work on tax policy, education, and practitioner support. 

  • He regularly speaks at national events and provides timely insights on legislative changes, emerging tax issues, and practical implications for tax professionals. 

  • Ryan is frequently involved in committees and public discussions around tax policy and works to translate complex developments into actionable guidance for members.
