Cryptocurrency is becoming more widely adopted and many individuals will hold some digital currency as part of a portfolio. Using Bitcoin as an example, this presentation will cover the basics of cryptocurrency, how it is created and transferred, how transactions are treated for Canadian tax purposes, and custody issues surrounding digital wallets.


Michael Maier, Ph.D., CPA, CGA
Associate Dean, Master’s and Professional Programs Alberta School of Business, University of Alberta 

Michael Maier is an award winning professor who has been recognized for teaching excellence at the University of Alberta as a two-time recipient of the McKenzie MBA Teaching Excellence Award. He is currently the Associate Dean for Master’s Programs in the Alberta School of Business. He was instrumental in the development of the first graduate degree program in Alberta that is accredited by CPA Alberta leading towards the CPA designation and has taught extensively in masters programs designed for senior level executives. 

Michael has published in leading accounting and economics journals along with articles in accounting practitioner publications. Current research focuses on technology, cryptocurrency, accounting, banking, and regulatory issues.
